Objectives: To determine the frequency of congenital abnormalities,abortions intrauterine deaths, still births, macrosomic babies and biochemical abnormalities in pregnant women having diabetes coming to Isra University Hospital.

Place and duration: This study was carried out in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Isra University Hospital, Hyderabad,from1st April 2005 to 30th March 2006.

Study design: Observational & descriptive study.

Materials & Method: Total 150 women were included who had gestational diabetes or established diabetes. Glycemic control of patients was assessed by doing pre and post meal sugar levels, while admitted in hospital, women who were booked sugar profile form was given to them to assess sugar level at home at least twice week.Neonatal assessment was done immediately after birth by performing Apgar score.Outcome of fetus included IUD, stillbirth, ENND, CA, abortion, weight of baby biochemical abnormalities, hypoglycemia, hypocalcaemia andHyperbillirubenemia.Data was collected on simple questionnaire after taking informed consent and was analyzed in SPSS version 16.0.

Results: Study outcome was measured by immediate neonatal assessment. Among fetal complications macrosomia was seen in 34%, IUD were 3.3% still born were 2.6%, congenital abnormalities seen in 4.6%, birth Asphyxia was seen in 36 infants.

Conclusion: Final conclusion drawn from this study is that lack of prenatal care, poor health information and sub optimal glycemic control is associated with adverse fetal out comes. we need to encourage preconception counseling vigilant antenatal care, screening of DM, intensive care for neonates and management according to standard obstetric procedures for better out comes.
